We had another visit from the Library Service van this week and these lucky lads had the pleasure of choosing 60 new books for our school library. It was great to see how popular the boys choices were and see the new books flying off the shelves.
After lunch on a Thursday at Duloe, we have a shared reading time where children from different classes enjoy a story with each other. This week we had some wonderful examples of siblings reading to each other.
A huge congratulations to our High 5 Netball squad who won a tremendous match this week. Not only did they show great skill and perseverance, more importantly they demonstrated excellent sportsmanship. .
Under the highly skilled eye of Mrs Rice, the children at Duloe have been busy learning about how to grow vegetables in our school allotment. The children have been getting their hands dirty planting seeds, learning about food miles and even had the opportunity to test a range of new fruits and vegetables. After half-term, Years 5 and 6 will have the opportunity to use the allotment to bring their science lessons to life!
A massive congratulations to our Cross Country team who did another excellent job at the latest race cross-country league race. All the boys and the girls ran with so much commitment and enjoyment. Well done guys!
Class 2 have been studying French artist Rosseau, known for his richly coloured and detailed
paintings of jungles, animals and exotic flowers. He never went to the
rainforest, but took his inspiration from books - like us. His paintings often
have over sized flowers, so some of us recreated this feature, while others
wanted to keep it 'real'!
Class 2 discussed background and
foreground and talked about what colours they wanted for the 'wash' as the
background. They mixed their own colours, using primary colours and then used
black and white for shades and tints of different colours. They also experimented
with different ways of using our paintbrushes to create leaves and other
features.
Class 3 had some very special visitors to help them with their writing today. Willow from Class 3, brought in two pythons for her classmates to feel and observe. Class 3 will use this experience to help them with their descriptive writing. As part of our Rainforest topic, they will be able to describe the movement and appearance of the snakes within their writing.
Over the last few months, children in Class 2 have been working to write a song about climate change. To achieve this, they were visited by some guest speakers to help them to think about what climate change means to them and how they might be able to spread the message and do their own small things to help. They were given time with a professional musician to write the music for a song. Last week, it all came together at St. Martin's Church in Liskeard where the schools in our Trust came together to share their songs. Singing has a strong tradition at Duloe and we were delighted to be part of this project. Well done to all of the children and we look forward to the final part of the process at The Eden Project in September!
Class 1 have been very busy learners this week: Wild Tribe has seen the children working together to make rain sticks; there has been a bread-making workshop led by a professional chef, balance-ability has seen the children developing their cycling skills with the help from one of our Arena coaches and they have been making bird food to help encourage wildlife into our school garden. .
A huge congratulations to Lawrence, Toby and Perran who have been crowned winners of the Liskeard and Looe Youth Speaks competition. The boys decided to base their presentation on their school topic, answering the question, 'Why save the rain-forest?'
The boys are pictured with Mandy Clarke, who did a fantastic job in preparing the children for the competition.
We look forward to seeing how the children get on in the next round of the competition in March.
Well done boys!
