Following parental feedback (October 2020) on the government decision to make Relationships and Sex Education compulsory and our proposed approach to deliver PSHE we have now adopted our PSHE curriculum (including RSE), which is used across our trust.
The vast majority of responses were fully supportive of our approach and policy. Where parents had individual questions, these were responded to by the head of school.
Some comments were as follows:
'I fully support the teaching of RSE and think the policy looks excellent-carefully considered and well thought out'
'Glad to see that LGBT is now being taught as well'
'I would like to see the exact material my sons will be taught' this parent has been invited to view material in advance of lessons being taught
'Does the RSE also cover alternative means of conception ie IVF?' this parent was responded to showing how alternative methods are covered in Upper KS2

The DfE have made Relationships Education compulsory in all primary schools in England. Bridge Schools Trust follows the national curriculum and any associated updates to DfE policy. We are proposing all our schools follow this government guidance and provide you as parents with the opportunity to feedback to us on this proposal. The PSHE curriculum we offer is fully compliant with the DfE Statutory Relationships & Health Education Guidance. All of the compulsory subject content is age appropriate and developmentally appropriate. It will be taught sensitively and inclusively, with respect to the backgrounds and beliefs of children and parents while always with the aim of providing children with the knowledge they need of the law. This programme is being introduced this academic year and will be communicated to our stakeholders throughout the year, being reviewed in July 2021. Alongside learning in PSHE, children will develop their resilience and character in many other ways, growing to be kind, happy, honest, successful and productive members of society.

The legislation makes it clear that all schools should approach PSHE, relationships and sex education in a faith sensitive and inclusive way and The Church of England Education Office supports the approach taken by the government, including recommending an age-appropriate provision of sex education at primary level.
Bridge School’s PSHE policy, which includes relationships and sex education, is in line with the Church of England’s “A Charter For Faith Sensitive and Inclusive Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education (RSHE)” and draws on the advice given in the Church of England document ‘Valuing All God’s Children’ 2019.
The Church of England states in “Valuing All God’s Children”, 2019, that Relationships and Sex education should: “be designed to prepare all pupils for the future, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. RSE must promote gender equality and LGBT equality and it must challenge discrimination. RSE must take the needs and experiences of LGBT people into account and it should seek to develop understanding that there are a variety of relationships and family patterns in the modern world.” (Page 34)
It also asserts: “Central to Christian theology is the truth that every single one of us is made in the image of God. Every one of us is loved unconditionally by God. We must avoid, at all costs, diminishing the dignity of any individual to a stereotype or a problem. Church of England schools offer a community where everyone is a person known and loved by God, supported to know their intrinsic value” (page 1)
In addition to this, we also ensure that each school provides their community with appropriate guidance relevant to their own needs. This may be shaped around increased financial education in areas of high deprivation, water safety/life-saving lessons for coastal schools and specific safeguarding lessons such as County Lines.
