Thank you so much for supporting the Well Dressing on Friday 16th May. Our Reception children adorned the well with flowers; our Year 3 children presented their Cornish dances; Year 5 presented their stunning mosaic. Thank you to the Cornwall Heritage Trust who are marking 40 years (the cupcakes were delicious!). We were very proud to be part of this unique event again this year.

We’ve had a brilliant week working on our class story ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ , practising learning the story using the story map and adding actions to help us remember. We’ve even added in the occasional ‘wild rumpus’ because it’s an excellent excuse to get out in the beautiful Brunel grounds.
Next week, we’re starting to write own stories set in Saltash, so we’re really excited about that. On the same theme, in DT we’re making wild thing puppets in felt, it’s quite a tricky process but such fun, so watch this space.
In History, we've had our own coronation and have been learning about how William the Conqueror became King by looking at the evidence in the Bayeux Tapestry
We’ve also visited Saltash Library for their Science week to try out some of their experiments and even met a robotic dog. Then we planted our sunflower seeds as we’re hoping to brighten up our outdoor space. If anyone has any spare plants at home, they'd be gratefully received.

A huge well done to our Year 6s who completed their end of KS2 SATs with such determination and maturity last week. We were so proud of each and every one of them. In addition to Year 6 completing their SATs, it was another busy week of learning opportunities at Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy. Take a look at this week's Brunel Bulletin to keep up-to-date with all the latest news from our school.

What a week we have had in Landaviddy! We have enjoyed Swimming with Mrs Phillips this week, and can’t wait to dive back in! In PE, we have continued working on our Team Building skills and really enjoyed working together to solve challenges.
Geography this week was all about weather symbols. We learnt what each symbol represents and enjoyed plotting current temperatures and weather on maps. In DT, we had an excellent time with taste testing a variety of vegetables, proteins and dairy items, to discover our favourite combinations. We will then be choosing our best combo for a healthy wrap design.
In Maths, both Year 2 and 3 have started a new unit on fractions, with Year 2 finding and recognising halves and Year 3 adding fractions.
In English, everyone has worked so hard on their persuasive letters to King Charles, which we hope to send next week. All of the children should be so proud of their efforts! Well done!
Congratulations to Charlie-Ray and Ida for being chosen as Landaviddy’s People of the Week! And a big well done to all those who achieved their 99 club this week!
We hope you have a lovely weekend, full of sunshine, and look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Apologies for the delay since my last news update but, as always, it has been another very busy period at school. Firstly, I would like to congratulate Year 6 pupils on completing their SATs before half term. Not only did they have to endure four days of intense assessment under exam conditions, but many of them had been arriving earlier that usual since March to attend booster sessions. This shows a real commitment and determination to do their best. Thank you also to their parents/carers for dropping them off early. Our Year 5 pupils have also played their part, joining me for three weeks to have their daily maths lesson in the library. This allowed Year 6 to focus on year group specific areas that needed revising prior to the tests. It was a real pleasure to work with Year 5 and to see how determined they are to succeed as mathematicians too.
I have recently reported on work to develop our forest school area. Mark Cocking, our caretaker, completed resurrecting the polytunnel and building the forest school storage shed. Class 3 enjoyed using the forest school for their class treat recently, which they earnt through their collective efforts in the classroom. A big thanks to Mark for his efforts and to Tesco for funding the resources.
The first week of whole class flute lessons in Class 3 and 4 were quite painful on the ear! However, in only a short space of time Sally Butlin, the teacher from Cornwall Music Service, has managed to progress the children towards making some more harmonious sounds. We hope, by the end of term, to invite the children's parents/carers in to listen to them perform a simple tune.
Last week, Class 4 children completed a design technology unit they had been working on for 6 weeks. They designed and made automaton, mechanical devices using cams to create moving parts. The brief was to design and make an automaton to display in a shop window, advertising the products in the shop. The learning steps also included using glue guns and accurately measuring and sawing materials. The children were delighted when their designs worked at the end, which is testament to their perseverance and accurate construction skills. The finished automaton look amazing.
Last Friday, during our training day, teachers were learning to use a cloud based learning tool called Showbie. There is lots of exciting potential for children to use Showbie on our new iPads to support learning but also to share children's work with this parents and carers. Once we are fully up and running with Showbie in September, we hope to set it up so parents and carers can see their children's stored learning.
Bridge MAT like to gather the views of parents/carers through an annual online survey. This helps inform future decisions about school improvement priorities. The survey closes on Monday 7th July. Please take a moment to complete this survey by following the link: Summer 2025 Bridge Schools Trust Parent and Carer Questionnaire
Finally, some dates for your diary:
24.6.25 - Sports evening from 5pm
26.6.25 - Reserve sports evening in the event of bad weather
30.6.25 - Year 6 group to attend county championship cricket match in Taunton
7.7.25 - Year 6 transition day at Callington College

We are so proud of all our Nursery children who are getting so good at sharing the resources and activities with their friends.
Some of the younger children are just settling in and the older ones are looking after them so well.
As the older children develop their friendships they can talk through their pretend play scenarios, negotiate with the others when they have to share ideas or toys, and help them extend the narrative of the play story.

This week the year 6 children completed their SATs tests. I am incredibly proud of how maturely they approached the tests and how much effort they put into them. They were fantastic! We celebrated by going to the park and they received their leavers hoodies.
This week, we have also been lucky to take part in many workshops at the library for their science week. They learned about robotics, NASA and the Mars Rover and rockets. This ended with them setting off rockets they had built on the playground.
We have also been creating games on Scratch using our coding skills and creating art work based on cacti using our watercolour and pastel skills.
Excellent work year 6, you have earned a relaxing weekend!

Some of this week’s learning:
In English this week, the children imitated the story of Mr
Gumpy’s Outing. They decided to change it to Miss Hughes’ Adventure. They
changed the characters in the story to a wolf, crab and turtle and came up with
some amazing verbs. The children then used the story map with Miss Hughes to
write a dictated sentence using their phonic knowledge.
In math’s this week we have explored adding different
numbers together in a variety if way and thinking about ‘How many more’ have
been added to a number!
In phonics children have been reading and writing
polysyllabic words containing adjacent consonants and have been working so hard
to word some tricky words!
In PE this week the children have continued to explore balls
skills, throwing and catching. They have worked with partners to control the ball
and ensure their partner is ready before rolling the ball and then progressing
to throwing and catching.
The children have also been exploring the life cycle of a
butterfly, using their funky fingers to make parts of a flower, making mini
beast jars and so much more!
Gentle reminder that next week is the last week before the
half term and Friday is an INSET.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend

Our 10 children in Year 6 did an excellent job with their SATs this week. The children were calm and focused and it was an absolute pleasure to see them approach the week in such a mature way. After their final assessment of the week the children were presented with their leavers hoodies to wear for the rest of term. Governor, Penny Geech, presented their hoodies. We would also like to thank Penny for generously volunteering her time to help invigilate the SATs assessments all week and keeping Year 6 supplied with biscuits and cake!

Year Group News
Year group newsletters have been emailed home today. Copies can also be found on the class pages of our website.
Year 6 KS2 SATs
Congratulations to our Year 6 children this week. With an earlier start coming into school for breakfast, followed by demanding assessments, they have demonstrated so many of our school values. The year isn’t over of course, and they have many end of primary school learning and enrichment opportunities to take part in.
Year 6 London Residential Meeting – Tuesday 20th May 15:30 (Hall)
A reminder that current Year 6 parents and children are invited to a meeting next Tuesday after school in the Hall. We will be sharing lots of important information and be available to answer questions about our upcoming residential to London.
Staffing Update
We have a couple of staffing updates to share with everyone.
Caroline Lucock and Natasha Blue will be away from school for several weeks as they recover from operations they are having. Tracey Snell, who works for the Trust and will be a familiar face for many, will be supporting Claire Gallie in the office whilst Caroline is away. We have also moved around some of our Teaching Assistants whilst Natasha is away. On behalf of the school community, we wish them both speedy recoveries.
At the end of this academic year, we will be saying farewell to two of our wonderful Teaching Assistants, Gill Bryant and Trish Taylor. Having devoted 10 years to WPA, Gill is off to explore new adventures. Trish has been successful in her application to join the SCITT primary teacher training course. Both Gill and Trish will be a huge loss for the school, but equally we are so pleased for them and their futures.
Reception’s Assembly
Well done to our Reception children for their wonderful year group assembly this morning. We had a song, sharing of work with parents and a slideshow of their learning. Thank you to everyone who came along – it was a very special morning.
Year 4 Assembly – Thursday 22nd May
We look forward to seeing family members of Year 4 at their assembly next Thursday. Doors open from 08:30, with a start time of 09:00. To help the morning drop-off routine, any Year 4 families driving are encouraged to park in the staff car park (double parking is fine).
Diamond Cup Final
This week, our boys’ football team made us proud by making it to the final of the Diamond Cup! The match took place at Charlestown FC, and the boys started strong with Harry scoring two goals. Max then sealed the victory with a beautifully executed penalty, resulting in a 3-2 win! The opposing team put up a tough fight, but we showcased great teamwork and resilience throughout the game. Well done everyone on a fantastic end to the tournament. Your positive attitudes and smiles truly made us proud.
House Points
Congratulations to this week’s winning House, Swans. Choughs maintain a narrow lead:
Choughs – 8971
Swans – 8872
Puffins – 8245
Cormorants – 7907
Don’t forget next week is a bit shorter as we break up for May half term on Thursday (normal time).
With very best wishes,
Chris Wathern

The sun has been out for us this week and it's been absolutely lovely! We've taken our learning outside at every opportunity!
Maths:
Both year groups have been working their way through the second decimal unit. Year 5 have been adding and subtracting decimals, whereas year 4 have been thinking about the place value of the digits in a decimal problem.
English:
We've had fun with poetry. Children have written poems about specific shapes, colours and animals using writing techniques such as personification and similes to create imagery.
Geography:
We have been conducting an experiment all week: We have placed a thermometer in the garden, a rain gauge on the playing field and we have been looking through a cloud coverage device which determines how many oktas of clouds are in the sky (overcast, scattered, broken or a clear sky). Talland are checking if their predictions for cloud coverage (oktas), rain (in mm) and temperature (degrees Celsius) are correct.
Computing:
We have taken a quiz and played with the Micro:Bits this week, which are cool devices for creating codes on.
Science:
Talland learnt about friction and conducted some small experiments to determine what might give an abject more friction or less friction. The use of jelly and oil was a fun and messy way to find out.
PE:
We have been lucky enough to get two swims in this week. It's been great seeing the children flourish in the water. I was so proud to see some children build the confidence to swim with their faces in the water and get into the correct body positions to kick their legs. It was also brilliant teaching some of the children how to tumble turn. Some off them were able to tumble turn and push off the wall in a stream line position; that is quite the skill!
CONGRATULATIONS to Lily, Callum and Chillali for earning their next badge in 99 club - excellent effort! I also wanted to say a massive well done and thank you to all of Talland class for supporting the year 6's in their SATs this week. They were so respectful and made me really proud!
That's all from us this week so we wish you a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing you all on Monday!
Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Miss. Colton.

It's been another busy week with glorious weather so ample opportunities for outdoor learning and practice for the up-coming Bridge school games. Please continue to send your child in with sun cream applied (and in their bag for re-application) along with sun hats so we can make the most of the unseasonably warm weather.
SATs
This week our Year 6 children sat their end of KS2 SATs with tests in reading, grammar, spelling, punctuation and maths! We are blown away with their mature determination and boundless resilience – they have been absolutely amazing! Regardless of their results, we are immensely proud of them and hope both they and you are too.
WATERSPORTS
Next week is the final week of this half term - it's flown by!
We complete the half term with the re-launch of water sports for our older children. We have again this year secured the full funding from our generous community so Tregeagle class will have kayaking, paddle boarding and sailing lessons for the next 8 weeks. This will build on their swimming lessons with an enhanced focus on water safety, collaboration and stamina.
FOPA
Thanks to some fantastic fundraising by FOPA, Tregeagle class is off to Truro, Hall for Cornwall, to watch Terrible Tudors from the Horrible History collection. Canute class also has a special outing planned courtesy of FOPA. They will take a trip on the Lappa Valley railway when we return after the half term break.
INSET DAY
Reminder that Friday 23rd is an INSET day for staff, so the last day for the children is Thursday. We have decided to bring back “Ice Lolly Friday”. On the last day of the week, the children can bring in 50p and buy an ice lolly.
Enjoy the sunshine

Our Year 6 children were incredible this week - they were an absolute credit to their families and took each and every day in their stride!
We began each day with a chilled SATs breakfast, where the children were able to come in and have a calm, pleasant time together before the day began.
They came in smiling, ready and enthusiastic to get the tests done and they absolutely brought their 'A Game'!
This is a class who truly do support each other and their work ethic is something to behold!
They are also a resilient group of young people - something that the Government is saying we maybe need to work on in schools - not with this amazing bunch; they have 'grit' in abundance!
Sitting SATs tests does not show all the many gifts, talents and qualities that our children possess. They measure them on the day in a limited range of subjects and while I know that our children will have risen to those challenges and shown exactly how hard they have worked towards these goals, we know that they will go on to be incredible adults who will all be successful in their own individual and brilliant ways!
A massive thank you to our families - you are raising a phenomenal group of young people and we appreciate the support, kindness and positivity that you give us each and every day!

It's been another busy week with glorious weather and lots of outdoor learning for the children. Thank-you for sending children in with sun-cream applied and in bags so that they can re-apply it. We also ask that hats are also worn - it is amazing to be able to get out in the sun but we all want the children to be safe. This week was a big one for Year 6. They sat their end of KS2 SATs this week with tests in reading, grammar, spelling, punctuation and maths! Regardless of their results, each and every one of them gave 100% and their attitude during the week was fantastic. They all did amazingly and should be proud of themselves. Next week is the final week of this half term - it's flown! The staff have an INSET day on Friday so the last day for the children will be Thursday. Even though it is the last week of half term, we are still launching our new toddler group "Mini-miners". This will run in the hall each Tuesday from 9.45 until 11 and is a chance for children aged 0-4 to come along with their adults and enjoy some arts and crafts, soft play and much more. It is open to all and is free of charge. If you know someone who may enjoy this group, please let them know. We're really looking forward to seeing everyone next Tuesday.

Chaipel Y6s have made it through their SATS week and still have smiles on their faces! The bacon sandwiches for breakfast helped to start each day off well and they all embraced the tests, giving it 100%. We celebrated in style by a well-deserved ice-cream at Noah's dad's cafe and a trip to Talland beach. Thank you, Year 5s, for your patience and consideration this week - you really supported your classmates.
ENGLISH
We have edited and improved our Tudor narratives and written up our best copies. Some of the plots are full of twists and turns and I can't wait to read each and every one.
MATHS
Y5s have been investigating decimals and are beginning to add and subtract. Their place value knowledge is improving by the week and next week, we will be multiplying and dividing by 10/100/1000.
WIDER CURRICULUM
We have been exploring push and pull factors for migration in Geography this week. We will move onto comparing air/noise pollution in different areas as part of our fieldwork, in the coming weeks. In Science, we have been looking into natural selection as part of our Evolution enquiry and in RE, we have been thinking about what Jesus' kingdom might be like, picking apart the hymn, Lord of the Dance.
Congratulations to Joel and Phoebe for being our People of the Week, demonstrating our school values and being role models to the rest of the school.
That's all from me so have a lovely weekend and see you on Monday for the start of a 4-day last week of half term.
Miss Randle, Mrs Clary, Miss Hodge and Miss Colton.

This week has been full of exciting learning experiences and memorable moments! In English, we have been focusing on writing the story of The Magic Bed from memory. Everyone has worked really hard to remember the key events, use descriptive language, and sequence the story correctly. It's been wonderful to see such creative ideas and imagination coming through in our writing.
In Maths, we successfully completed our unit on mass and volume. The children have shown great understanding when comparing, measuring, and estimating different weights and capacities. We have now started a brand-new unit on multiplication and division, which is already proving to be a fun and engaging challenge for the class.
In PE, we had the opportunity to try our hand at cricket. The children showed great enthusiasm and picked up the basic skills quickly. We even spotted some fantastic fielders during our practice games—excellent teamwork and quick reflexes all around!
During our PSHE lessons, we have been learning about friendship and how to be a kind and caring friend. We also explored the idea of personal space, discussing how to recognise when someone feels comfortable or uncomfortable with things like cuddles or holding hands. These important conversations are helping the children build empathy and respect for others’ boundaries.
In History, we continued our learning about Florence Nightingale. We began by recalling everything we’ve learnt about her life and work so far. Then, we looked more closely at the huge impact she had on hospitals. The children were fascinated to compare what hospitals were like before and after her contributions and were able to explain why she is such a significant historical figure.
Our Music lesson was an exciting one this week as we had a special session with Mrs. Butlin, who introduced us to the ukulele! The children were thrilled to have a go at playing, learning how to hold the instrument properly and strum a few basic chords. There were lots of smiles and laughter throughout the lesson.
To top off a lovely week, we enjoyed a fabulous picnic on the school field yesterday. The sun was shining, and it was the perfect opportunity to relax, enjoy each other’s company, and celebrate all our hard work.

We’ve had a wonderfully creative and hands-on week in Years 3 and 4, filled with storytelling, scientific discovery, historical investigation, and exciting physical challenges. Here's a look at what your children have been learning:
This week, our budding authors embarked on a journey into imaginary worlds. They began by designing their own fantastical settings, drawing inspiration from their vivid imaginations. These illustrations served as the foundation for planning the opening of their own stories. The focus was on crafting engaging introductions that set the scene and introduce characters, aligning with the national curriculum's emphasis on developing narrative writing skills in Years 3 and 4 .
In Maths:
Year 3: Students explored fractions, learning to recognise, find, and write fractions such as 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects, or quantity. They also practiced writing simple fractions and understanding equivalence, such as recognizing that 2/4 is the same as 1/2 .
Year 4: The focus was on geometry, specifically identifying and classifying shapes, understanding their properties, and exploring symmetry. This aligns with the curriculum's goal of enhancing spatial reasoning and geometric understanding in Year 4 .
We concluded our unit on magnetism by investigating how compasses work. Students learned that a compass needle aligns itself with Earth's magnetic field, always pointing north. They explored how this property has been historically significant for navigation. This hands-on exploration helped solidify their understanding of magnetic forces and their practical applications .
In Design and Technology, the children applied their knowledge of medieval structures to design their own castles. They considered features such as turrets, drawbridges, and moats, ensuring their designs met specific success criteria. This project encouraged creativity and practical application of design principles .
This week's PE sessions were led by a coach from Argyle, focusing on the standing long jump. Students practiced proper technique, emphasising balance, coordination, and explosive power. This activity not only improved their physical skills but also introduced them to athletic events in a fun and engaging way .
In a combined RE and Computing lesson, students explored various religious beliefs and how they are represented in digital media. They discussed the importance of respectful representation and learned basic skills in creating digital presentations to share their understanding. This interdisciplinary approach helped students appreciate the intersection of technology and cultural studies .
Our young historians delved into the mystery of Sutton Hoo, examining artifacts to deduce who might have been buried there. Through critical thinking and analysis, they learned about Anglo-Saxon culture and the significance of burial practices. This investigative approach fostered a deeper understanding of historical inquiry .
We are excited to announce the grand opening of our new Sistema Playground on Tuesday! This event will celebrate the culmination of our students' hard work and provide a fantastic new space for play and learning. Families are welcome to join us for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to another week of learning and discovery!
